## A New Era for Long-Haul Flying

For nearly two decades, the Boeing 777-300ER has been a mainstay of Air Canada's long-haul operations, dominating routes from Toronto Pearson International Airport and Vancouver International Airport across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. However, with the 777-300ER fleet averaging 16.2 years of age and the 777-200LR variants passing 18 years, the Canadian carrier has been facing a ticking clock for its long-standing fleet.

According to fleet tracking data from Planespotters.net, Air Canada operates 19 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft alongside six 777-200LR variants, forming the heavy widebody spine of its international network. With operating older aluminum widebodies across 15-hour transpacific routes creating an escalating financial burden, Air Canada has chosen to opt for the Airbus A350-1000 for its next era of international expansion.

## A Shift Away from Boeing

The decision marks a significant shift away from Boeing, with Air Canada choosing to bypass the delayed 777X program in favor of European composite-twin technology. The airline has confirmed a firm commitment for eight Airbus A350-1000s, with purchase rights for eight additional aircraft.

Air Canada's leadership, including Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Mark Galardo and Chief Financial Officer John Di Bert, have chosen an operational path focused on delivery certainty over delayed promises. The A350-1000 features a composite airframe constructed from over 50% carbon fiber reinforced polymers, titanium, and advanced aluminum alloys, delivering up to a 25% reduction in fuel burn and carbon emissions per seat compared to the aluminum 777-300ERs it will replace.

## A Modernized Long-Haul Network

The A350-1000 offers an impressive maximum operating range of 9,000 nautical miles (16,668 km), allowing the airline to fill the aircraft with passengers while carrying high-yield cargo in the lower deck across 16-hour transpacific and South Asian sectors. This means the airline can capture full payload revenue on ultra-long-haul routes, without the operational compromises that come with flying older aluminum airframes.

Air Canada's long-haul strategy is built on a disciplined, three-tiered fleet architecture that segments route profiles by capacity and range. Single-aisle A321XLRs have been brought in to be the long-range spearhead for secondary transatlantic pairs, opening point-to-point markets from Montreal and Halifax to Western Europe. Intermediate thick routes, such as high-density transcontinental legs and transatlantic corridors between major hubs, account for 14 incoming 787-10 Dreamliner orders. The flagship Airbus A350-1000 sits atop this structure, serving as the heavy-lift backbone designed specifically for premium high-density trunk routes and nonstop ultra-long-haul operations.

The arrival of the A350-1000 will unlock new possibilities for long-haul flying for Air Canada's customers, enabling direct, uncompromised nonstop links to high-growth markets across India, Southeast Asia, and Australia that were previously unviable. This new position is one of serious promise, allowing the airline to capture high-yielding, point-to-point business and diaspora traffic directly from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
