McKinney Readies for Commercial Service After Decades of Planning
McKinney National Airport has received its Airport Operating Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration. This Part 139 certification, the first granted to a Texas airport in over 20 years, legally permits commercial passenger operations.
The airport is preparing to open a new 45,000-square-foot passenger terminal. The facility was designed with three gates and can eventually expand to five. Commercial service is expected to begin in November.
Avelo Commits to North Texas Base with Nine Planned Routes
Avelo Airlines has confirmed it will establish a base at McKinney National Airport. It is the first and only commercial airline to announce service there.
The carrier has committed to operating nine routes from the airport. No other airlines have revealed plans to serve McKinney.
Airport Infrastructure Supports Transition to Commercial Hub
McKinney National Airport is located 30 miles north of downtown Dallas. The 778-acre facility has a 7,002-foot concrete runway capable of handling commercial aircraft.
Infrastructure includes US Customs services for potential international flights. A contracted FAA control tower operates from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily. The airport offers 1,500 parking spaces and rental car facilities.
The FAA invested more than $9 million in infrastructure improvements at the airport. This funding supported new taxiway construction and federal control tower upgrades. In 2023, the FAA recorded over 142,000 aircraft operations at the airport, which was first established in 1979.
Dan Edwards highlighted the community benefits. "The community around McKinney is growing rapidly, and accommodating commercial flights will provide the community with greater access to air travel options," he said. The airport becomes the third commercial airport in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, following DFW International and Dallas Love Field.
Avelo Airlines’ inaugural flight from McKinney National Airport will operate on November 11 to Fort Myers.
