TAP Air Portugal will launch a new nonstop route between Lisbon and Orlando on October 29. The Portuguese flag carrier will operate the flights three times per week using its Airbus A330-900neo aircraft.

Flights are scheduled for Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The westbound journey from Lisbon to Orlando is timed at 9 hours and 50 minutes, while the eastbound return takes 7 hours and 50 minutes. Tickets for the new service are already available for booking on the airline's website.

Route schedule and aircraft

The airline has assigned flight numbers TP267 for the Lisbon to Orlando leg and TP268 for the return. The route spans 4,132 miles. According to the source, Simple Flying, the initial launch week in late October will see slightly different arrival and departure times due to a one-week gap in daylight saving time changes between Portugal and Florida. The standard winter schedule will apply from November 2.

TAP selected its flagship A330-900neo for the route instead of its smaller A321LR aircraft. The A330neo features the Airspace cabin with 34 lie-flat business class seats. It also includes a new "Economy Prime" cabin on the first three rows of economy, which comes with a 'neighbor-free guarantee' and additional perks like priority services and upgraded meals.

Former TAP CEO Antonoaldo Neves called the aircraft the airline's "new flagship" when it was introduced. He said it was "shaped to meet TAP’s ambition to offer the best product in the industry."

Strategic expansion in North America

This move continues TAP's recent growth in the North American market. The airline added service from Lisbon to Los Angeles last year. It also began narrowbody service from Porto to Boston, a route originally planned as seasonal but now extended into the winter with twice-weekly flights.

The addition of Orlando will bring TAP's total North American winter schedule to over 82 weekly flights. This represents a 7% increase over the previous winter and is the airline's largest winter schedule ever for the region. The source notes that much of TAP's growth has been fueled by using its A321LR aircraft on routes that might not support year-round widebody service. This strategy allows the airline to preserve its larger A330s for lucrative long-haul routes to South America and Africa.

Orlando's competitive long-haul market

TAP is entering a busy market. Orlando International Airport will offer 106 weekly long-haul departures across 17 international destinations this winter. This marks a 14% increase from the previous year. Europe accounts for most of these flights, but nearly a third of Orlando's long-haul traffic goes to Brazil.

Last year, Orlando added three new long-haul destinations. Air France returned from Paris after a decade-long absence. Iberia started its first service from Madrid to Central Florida. Discover Airlines also began connecting Munich to Orlando.

For TAP, the value of the Orlando route lies in its Lisbon hub. The connection can funnel passengers between Central Florida and destinations across Portugal, Europe, and Africa. This network feed makes Orlando a calculated entry into a major US leisure market rather than a standalone speculative route.
