JetBlue employees made an unexpected discovery during a routine aircraft check at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). A man was found sleeping aboard an Airbus A320 that was undergoing maintenance. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 2, resulted in the arrest of 32-year-old Sammuel Lackey of Fort Lauderdale.

## Discovery During Aircraft Inspection

The man was found by JetBlue’s Move team, who were preparing the aircraft for its next operation after maintenance. According to a 911 call, workers had turned on the plane and were conducting a walk-around inspection when they spotted the trespasser sleeping toward the rear of the aircraft. The discovery forced the airline to delay the flight and incur additional costs, estimated at around $2,400.

The aircraft was not carrying passengers at the time, which explains why the trespasser was not immediately detected. Authorities were alerted, and the man was removed from the plane and taken into custody.

## How the Trespasser Gained Access

The arrest report details how Lackey allegedly entered the secured area. Deputies reported that he walked along a service road near JetScape, used a portable staircase to board the aircraft, and hid in the aft lavatory before falling asleep. Authorities claim he admitted to climbing over a fence to reach the secure identification display area and aircraft operations area at FLL.

This incident highlights the strict access controls in place around parked aircraft, even when they are not boarding passengers. Unauthorized entry can cause significant disruptions, including additional inspections, delayed maintenance, and law enforcement involvement before the aircraft can return to service.

## Legal Consequences and Charges

Lackey now faces three charges: burglary of an occupied conveyance, criminal mischief involving more than $1,000, and interrupting or impairing critical infrastructure. As of August 19, he remained in custody. A Broward County Circuit Court judge found probable cause for all three charges, though the case will ultimately determine whether prosecutors can prove the allegations.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough aircraft inspections, even after maintenance is complete. While the discovery of an unauthorized person on board disrupted operations, it also raised questions about airport security and infrastructure.
