The US Air Force is rebuilding five major bases, with a total investment of $19 billion, to create global mission hubs

The US Air Force is investing heavily in its global mission hubs, with a total of $19 billion being spent on five major bases. This investment is the largest since the Cold War, and it is expected to transform the way the Air Force operates in the future.

## North Field, Tinian - A $409 Million Jungle-Clearing Project

North Field, Tinian, is one of the five bases being rebuilt by the Air Force. The project, which has a budget of $409 million, aims to create a "power projection platform" in the Pacific, just 118 miles from Guam. The base will have four historic 8,500-foot runways, which will be cleared of vegetation and repaved.

| Base | Runway Length (ft) | | --- | --- | | North Field, Tinian | 8,500 | | Andersen AFB, Guam | 12,000 | | Tyndall AFB, Florida | 10,000 | | Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota | 10,000 | | RAF Lakenheath, UK | 9,000 |

The project is part of the Air Force's Agile Combat Employment (ACE) doctrine, which aims to spread aircraft, fuel, and crews across small, austere fields instead of concentrating them on a handful of large ones.

## Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota - A $2 Billion Head Start

Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, is being rebuilt as the Air Force's first Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider main operating base and formal training unit. The construction program has a budget of $2 billion and is designed to let the base keep flying the B-1B while simultaneously standing up an entirely new maintenance system for the B-21.

| Base | B-21 Budget (USD) | | --- | --- | | Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota | $2 billion | | Other bases | $1.5 billion |

The base is expected to receive its first B-21 Raider in 2027, and it will also serve as the Formal Training Unit that will qualify every B-21 crew and maintainer the service produces.

## RAF Lakenheath, UK - A $1.6 Billion Nuclear Mission

RAF Lakenheath, UK, is being rebuilt as part of a $4.2 billion Air Force investment spread across three UK bases. The base is receiving $1.6 billion of this investment, which is being used to build a hardened Primary Command Post and a Defender Operations Compound.

| Base | Investment (USD) | | --- | --- | | RAF Lakenheath, UK | $1.6 billion | | RAF Mildenhall, UK | $1.1 billion | | RAF Fairford, UK | $500 million |

The base is being rebuilt to support the Air Force's nuclear "surety" mission, which includes the storage, guard, and control of B61-series gravity bombs.

## Tyndall AFB, Florida - A $5 Billion Rebuild

Tyndall AFB, Florida, is being rebuilt after Hurricane Michael destroyed or damaged 484 buildings in 2018. The base is being rebuilt from a blank slate, with a budget of $5 billion. The project includes a $3 billion Natural Disaster Recovery Program and a $604 million contract for 11 F-35 flight-line buildings.

| Base | Investment (USD) | | --- | --- | | Tyndall AFB, Florida | $5 billion | | Other bases | $3 billion |

The base is expected to become a "highly sought-after assignment" once construction is complete.

## Andersen AFB, Guam - An $8 Billion Shield

Andersen AFB, Guam, is being rebuilt as part of an $8 billion Enhanced Integrated Air and Missile Defense System. The system includes 16 separate interceptor and radar sites spread across the island to create a 360-degree shield against ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic threats.

| Base | Investment (USD) | | --- | --- | | Andersen AFB, Guam | $8 billion | | Other bases | $1 billion |

The base is not receiving any hardened aircraft shelters, despite the scale of the spending.
