However, when you factor in the number of passengers the aircraft can carry, the mpg per passenger increases significantly. For example, Qantas' 747-400s carried 364 passengers across three classes, which works out to around 65.5 mpg per passenger.

In comparison, a car with a good mpg is considered to be around 50 mpg, which means that a car carrying two people would achieve around 100 passenger miles per gallon. This suggests that flying on a 747 still uses substantially more fuel than a car carrying multiple people, but less than a car carrying one person.

How Does a 747 Sustain This Consumption?

The 747's high fuel consumption is due in part to its need to take off, which is the most fuel-intensive part of any flight. The exact fuel consumption during takeoff depends on a number of factors, including the aircraft's weight and the distance it needs to travel. However, estimates suggest that the 747 can burn through around 5,000 gallons of fuel during takeoff alone.

To sustain such high fuel consumption, the 747 has a number of large fuel tanks located in its wings. The debut 747 could carry around 48,400 gallons of fuel, while later variants increased this capacity to around 63,034 gallons.

Despite this, some airlines like Virgin Atlantic have already begun using SAF in their operations, and it's likely that we'll see more widespread adoption in the future.
