American Airlines launches automatic seat
American Airlines has introduced an automatic seat change feature in its mobile app for AAdvantage members traveling solo.

American Airlines has introduced a new automatic seat change feature in its mobile app for AAdvantage members. The system reassigns solo travelers to preferred seats within the same cabin at no extra cost, monitoring availability up to 24 hours before departure.
Members can set preferences for aisle, middle, or window seats during enrollment. They can also request a seat closer to the front or a bulkhead row. The feature is available under 'Trip options' as 'Automatic seat change' for members traveling on a single passenger reservation with an already assigned seat.
Seat changes occur only if a matching preferred seat opens and requires no payment. The system sends a notification when a reassignment happens. The automatic search stops after one successful move, if the traveler manually changes their own seat, or when the 24-hour pre-departure cutoff is reached. Members can manually change their seat and then re-enable the feature to continue the search.
How the automatic seat change feature works
The system continuously monitors seat availability. When a seat matching a member's preferences becomes available, it automatically reassigns them. All changes stay within the traveler's existing ticketed cabin class and avoid any additional seat charges.
Requests are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The airline prioritizes them by the member's AAdvantage status level first, then by the time they enrolled in the feature. Exit row seats are explicitly excluded from the automatic reassignment process.
Key limitations and exclusions
The feature has several important restrictions. It is only available to AAdvantage members traveling alone on a reservation with a pre-assigned seat. It does not apply to exit rows. Monitoring and automatic changes cease entirely 24 hours before the flight's scheduled departure.
The handling of preferences for extra-legroom seats, like Main Cabin Extra, is unclear from available information. AAdvantage Gold members separately gain access to complimentary Main Cabin Extra seats within 24 hours of departure on eligible tickets.
Elite benefits and industry context
Top-tier AAdvantage members gain an additional, separate perk. Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members can now pre-order their complimentary Main Cabin snack up to 20 hours before departure. This applies on select flights over 1,100 miles where American sells buy-on-board items. Pre-ordering helps secure a preferred choice before quantities are limited.
This automated seat feature represents a catch-up move for American. United Airlines launched a similar automatic seat preference system in March 2024. By July of that year, United reported that more than 30% of customers who saved a preference were moved to their preferred seat. United's initial version included exit rows and monitored availability until 12 hours before departure.
Savvy travelers have long used third-party tools to manually check for seat openings. The new automation saves time but may intensify competition for last-minute desirable seats. One observer noted, "Admittedly American is only playing catch-up here with United, and is making up for its lost decade with little customer experience innovation." Another called it a positive step, stating, "Objectively, this is a great change, so kudos to American for continuing to improve its technology."
Despite the automation, members can and likely will continue to manually check seat maps during the final 24 hours before their flight.
