KLM will offer free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi on all its intercontinental flights starting in mid-2027. The service will be free for all Flying Blue loyalty program members across every cabin class. KLM made the announcement on its 107th anniversary, positioning itself as an early European adopter of the satellite-based internet system.

Aircraft and rollout details

The Starlink service will be introduced in phases beginning in mid-2027. It is destined for the airline's long-haul fleet, including Boeing 777s, Boeing 787s, and newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft. The exact completion date for the fleet-wide rollout is not yet known.

KLM will not install Starlink on its short and medium-haul flights. The airline is modernizing its narrow-body fleet, phasing out older Boeing 737-700s and 737-900s which currently lack connectivity. Airbus A330s, which are also being phased out, are not expected to receive the new Starlink hardware.

Service capabilities and access

Starlink provides gate-to-gate high-speed, low-latency broadband via a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. This technology supports live streaming, online gaming, productivity tasks, and e-commerce. Its coverage extends over oceans and remote routes where traditional connectivity struggles.

Passengers can access the Wi-Fi by logging in with their Flying Blue account. Those who are not yet members can sign up for the free loyalty program before or during the flight via the onboard portal. Once registered, they can use the free Wi-Fi on any equipped aircraft.

Context within KLM’s connectivity strategy

This long-haul initiative extends KLM's existing free Wi-Fi offering on European flights, which has been available since the beginning of this year. The airline currently uses a mix of Intelsat and Panasonic systems on most of its wide-body planes and has recently installed Viasat Wi-Fi on narrow-body aircraft.

The Starlink rollout is part of a broader effort to provide a comfortable, digitally connected travel experience. KLM follows other major European carrier groups like IAG, Lufthansa Group, and its partner Air France, which have already started installing Starlink. Dozens of carriers worldwide have now signed up for the service.

CEO statement on passenger demand

KLM's Chief Executive Officer, Marjan Rintel, directly linked the move to passenger demand. Marjan Rintel said: "We are making a long-standing wish of our passengers a reality: fast, free Wi-Fi on intercontinental flights starting in mid-2027."

KLM will begin the phased installation of Starlink on its intercontinental wide-body aircraft starting in mid-2027.
