American Airlines has launched two new debit cards for UK residents, offering a novel way to earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points toward elite status through everyday spending. The AAdvantage Mastercard Black Debit Card and AAdvantage Mastercard Platinum Debit Card allow cardholders to accumulate rewards, including a pathway to British Airways Gold-equivalent status, without taking a flight.

Spending on the cards earns both AAdvantage miles and an equal number of uncapped Loyalty Points, which determine elite status tiers. The cards are issued in partnership with Currensea and work by connecting to most UK current accounts. Notably, payments to HM Revenue & Customs via the Currensea platform earn rewards, subject to a 0.95% transaction fee. Author said: "Someone with substantial HMRC bills could earn British Airways Gold-equivalent status from these cards purely by settling their tax bills."

Earning rates and fees

The two cards have different annual fees and earning structures, with the Black card offering higher rewards at a higher cost. Both cards apply a foreign exchange fee of the Realtime Rate plus 0.95% for spending in foreign currency. The Black card offers an optional higher earn rate for a higher FX fee.

Bonuses and elite status pathways

Sign-up, launch, and renewal bonuses provide an initial mileage boost, while the uncapped Loyalty Points from all spending form the core path to elite status. The American Airlines status year runs from March 1 to February 28, with all Loyalty Points resetting to zero on March 1, 2027.

The Black card offers a 5,000-mile sign-up bonus for spending £3,500 in foreign currency within 12 months, plus a 5,000-mile launch bonus for spending £250 with American Airlines. Its annual renewal bonus is 2,500 miles if £10,000 is spent in the previous year. The Platinum card offers a 2,000-mile sign-up bonus for spending £1,500 in foreign currency, a 2,000-mile launch bonus for the same airline spend, and a 1,000-mile annual renewal bonus after £5,000 in annual spend. All miles earned from spending also generate one Loyalty Point each, except for bonus miles from sign-up offers and special promotions. High spenders can reach BA Gold-equivalent status through card use alone. The Black card also includes priority check-in at Heathrow.

Practical usage and compatibility

The cards are designed for seamless integration with daily finances. They work with virtually all UK current accounts, excluding only Metro Bank and Co-op Bank, and are now compatible with Chase. Applications involve a soft credit check that leaves no trace on credit reports, with an expected 95% approval rate.

Existing Currensea debit card accounts for other programmes remain open, and users can hold multiple Currensea cards linked to the same bank account and phone. Transactions appear on bank statements with a specific reference, and miles are credited 15 days after a transaction clears. The cards support Apple Pay and Google Pay, and provide transaction tracking via the app, bank statements, and summary emails. They can be used at ATMs abroad with a fee of Realtime Rate plus 0.95% for the first £250 per month, and 2.5% thereafter, but UK ATM withdrawals are not supported. An optional Roundup Miles feature lets users earn one mile and one Loyalty Point for every 2p added by rounding transactions to the nearest 10p or 20p.

To have Loyalty Points count toward the status year ending February 28, 2027, cardholders must ensure their qualifying spending is completed by mid-February 2027 to allow points to post by the deadline.
