American Airlines adds 70 Flagship Suites to 777-300ER
American Airlines has unveiled a premium-heavy cabin on its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER, removing international First Class.

American Airlines has introduced its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER. The redesign replaces the international First Class cabin with an expanded Flagship Suite Business class.
The first aircraft with the new layout will enter commercial service on September 2. It will fly between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Buenos Aires.
A Premium-Heavy Configuration
The retrofit creates what American calls a premium-heavy configuration. The airline states this gives the aircraft more premium or extra-legroom seats than any other operated by a US carrier.
The new cabin offers 70 Flagship Suite business class seats. These feature privacy doors, additional storage, and a chaise-lounge position. The aircraft also has 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats. In total, that provides 144 seats with premium amenities or more legroom.
| Cabin Class | Number of Seats | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Flagship Suite Business | 70 | Privacy doors, chaise-lounge, extra storage |
| Premium Economy | 44 | Adjustable calf/foot rests, wireless charging |
| Main Cabin Extra | 30 | Extra legroom |
Product and Service Upgrades
The cabin design follows the premium interiors already on American's Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Other upgrades include new inflight-entertainment systems throughout the cabin.
Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi will be provided for AAdvantage members. This service is sponsored by AT&T.
Flagship Suite passengers receive priority airport services and lounge access where available. Their service includes multicourse meals, upgraded bedding, and amenity kits. Premium Economy seats come with adjustable calf and foot rests, wireless charging, additional storage, and both USB-C and AC power ports.
Fleet and Route Implications
American Airlines operates 20 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. They are used on major long-haul routes to cities including London, Tokyo, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Sydney.
With the introduction of this new product, American will stop selling its Flagship First class on the Boeing 777-300ER. This change takes effect for travel starting November 19.
The airline also plans to withdraw First Class from its premium transcontinental routes. This is scheduled for March 28, 2027, as more Airbus A321XLR aircraft join the fleet.
The retrofit program aligns the 777-300ER's product with the carrier's newer aircraft types. It emphasizes a larger business class cabin over a separate first class section on these specific wide-body jets.
